Objectives and competences

Student becomes familiar with the development of the whole East Mediteranean, with the notional complex Magna Graecia and ancient Greek influence on economic, social, political and cultural forms of that development. He is informed about the conditions of that time in the present Slovene territory. Based on this, he is able to comparatively evaluate the importance of the Greek culture and changes, brought about by it.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Periodization of Greek history. Minoan and Mycenaean Greece. The settlement of Indo-Europeans in Greece and their encounter with the aborigines. The Dorian Migration. Archaic Period. Formation and progress of city-states (Polis). The great Greek Colonization. State and social status in the colonizing period. Sparta. Athens. Formation and development of tyranny. Classical Period: The Greek and Persian wars (500 – 479 B. C.). The Ionian revolt and its progress until the battle of Marathon 490 B. C. The Persian expedition into Greece 480/479. West Greeks. The Pentekontentia. The foundation of Delian league. Athens in the Pericles period. The Peloponnesian War – motives, inducements and consequences. The period of the Spartan hegemony and the rise of Thebes. The development of the Greek state Syracusa on Sicily after the year 400 B. C. Greek colonization of the Adriatic coast and the elements of Greek presence in today's Slovene territory. Hellenistic Period. The formation and development of Macedonian state under Filip II. The accession of Alexander the Great. Alexander's Asian campaign and its meaning. Battle for Alexander's inheritance. The Diadoch wars. The period of balance between Hellenic states. The cultural and historical image of the Hellenic world.

Learning and teaching methods

Explanation, discussion, individual study, work with sources. The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Student is able to analyze the most important occurences, processes and changes in antique Greek history.
