Objectives and competences
The objectives of the course are:
- to deepen the knowledge about the methods that underly the contrastive text analysis and are based on a relational notion of style,
- to facilitate the recognition of style and its role in the building of textual sense in concrete German and Slovene textual examples
- to offer insight into the (linguistic manifestations of) intercultural differences between texts of the same text types in both languages.
Content (Syllabus outline)
- Contrastive textology as a common denominator for various contrastive approaches to text analysis
- Culture-specific differences in (partly and/or highly standardized) written text types (with a special emphasis on online texts)
- Style as a relational, interactive notion and a key element of textual sense, in connection with concrete textual realizations and their text types
- Methods of a cognitively based contrastive text and style analysis: morphological (linear, successive), holistic (parallel).
- Contrastive text and style analysis of select German and Slovene texts, focussing on the prototypical qualities of text types in both languages
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
On completion of this course the student will be able:
- to understand and use different contrastive approaches to text analysis,
- to identify and evaluate the overall style of texts and text types (holistic view),
- to research and describe the interculturally based differences between texts of the same text type in German and Slovene language,
- to appropriately choose and use culturally specific textual and stylistic elements in both German and Slovene language,
- to use an interdisciplinary approach to text analysis.
