Objectives and competences

Students Gain a theoretical and practical insight into the phonological and grammatical aspect of the language; Acquire the phonological and grammatical norm (rules) and are able to apply it in a functional manner; Are able to provide written transcripts of audial and articulated phenomena. Are able to provide a vocal (speech) account of the written phenomena.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The aim of the subject: Norm standards of modern literary language with regard to grammar and phonology. A critical historical review of norm (grammar, phonology) development of the Hungarian language; definition of terms (literary-)linguistic norm, linguistic culture; linguistic intervention with emphasis on the area of grammar and phonology. Grammar and phonology: Linguistic and systematic establishment of the literary-linguistic norm. A historical review of understanding grammatical and phonological issues. The connectedness of these issues with levels of the language system. Phonology and grammar - a theoretical framework. The science of written characters. Writing. Phonological and grammatical norm. Rules. Grammatical principles and exceptions of the Hungarian language. Practical exercises in phonology, exercises in grammar.

Learning and teaching methods

Presenting the content while at the same time encouraging students to assume a problem-based approach and to solve specific problems that were planned in advance. Encouraging students to actively help create and participate in insightful problems and critical judgement.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to: - a strengthened knowledge and understanding of grammatical and phonological norm, - defined notion of the voice – written character relation, - application of the acquired knowledge and abilities in real-life communication situations, - audially distinguish and pronounce voices and other phonetic phenomena, - readiness for continuous professional improvement, - presenting the content while at the same time encouraging to assume a problem-based approach and to solve specific problems that were planned in advance.
