Objectives and competences
Familirization with basic concept on social dimensions of languages in general, primarily in Hungarian speaking region also with respect to historical circumstances, as well as with the role and meaning of language in the life period of an individual and national community.
Familiarization with possible consequences of multibilingual coexistence for Hungarian language.
Recognition and understanding of natural orientation of bilinguism and multilinguism, as well as bicultivism and multicultivism, to construct and profoundly analyse the acceptance of differences.
A student recognizes, understands, uses, analyses, synthesizes and evaluates linguistic processes from the sociolinguistic point of view.
Prepare students for an individual work at searching and using professional literature.
Content (Syllabus outline)
Definition of sociolinguistics (social philology) as a boundary linguistic field between symbolic and social sciences.
Co – nomination of general linguistic and social concepts to the Hungarian linguistic material linguistic community, linguistic variation (according to rhetoric position; linguistic habits, linguistic norm and culture; national/state community, social groups, influence of social factors on the formation of value measures for language function.
Regional and social linguistics (national language, regional language, dialect, idiolect). Social variations. Mother tongue. Languages in contact. World – and non – world languages. Monolinguism, bilinguism, diglossy. Macro – and microsociolinguistics. Research methodology (questionnaires, data evaluation).
Linguistic policy in bilinguism. Familiarization with the bases of actual linguistic policy. Constitutional position of Hungarian language and linguistic practice. Struggle for language rights of Hungarian minorities.
Language and national identity.
Position of Hungarian language in Prekmurje. Mother tongue, the first language, the second language, foreign language.
Socio – and psycholinguistic aspects of bilinguism. Bilinguism in the Carpathian basin (historical review, classification, characteristics). Individual and collective bilinguism.
Possibilities of preserving minority languages and school system (mother tongue and another language).
Possibilities of preserving Hungarian (minority) language at bilingual lessons in Slovenia.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
On completion of this course the student will be able to:
- acquires basic terminology,
- understand the basic sociolinguistic knowledge, e.g. language varieties or nonlinguistic factors,
- knows and understands the basic concepts of the branch,
- gains competences for the approach to the problem and for solving problems and includes them into his critical opinion,
- understanding of the basic legitimaces with respect to bilinguism and bilingual school/educational system,
- transfer of theoretical knowledge into practice,
- communication in the branch and among the other branches,
- formation of communication abilities for a successful public appearance.
