Objectives and competences

The subject explains the words and phraseological nominations from the theoretical point of view. It familiarizes the students with basic characteristics of lexicology and phraseology. It qualifies the students how to recognize terminology analysis of the modern Hungarian language with regard to its different kinds and how to manipulate with different dictionaries and linguistic corpora. It points out the problems, which occur during the translation of the phrases.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Lexicology, lexicography, phraseology – definition of concepts. Place of the lexicology in the discipline of linguistics. • The academic vocabulary. Kinds of dictionaries, creating contents. • Lexicology and vocabulariy. Theory and practice of collecting vocabulary. • Vocabulary and phrases. Definition of a lexeme and its kinds • Definition and kinds of phrase • Division of vocabulary by origin • Division of vocabulary today, languages, langugae variations • Changing and moving of vocabulary. Language neology and language forming • Relation of bilingual lexicology, (interference, contact effect, borrowing). Detrianonisation of the Hungarian language. Hungarian-Hungarian online dictionary.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to: - show the knowledge of the word structure of the modern Hungarian language, - show the knowledge of the basic inter – vocabular relationships, - know the bases of lexical semantics, - recognize and critically evaluate the results of borrowed words and word innovations, - use the adequate terminology correctly, to evaluate and use the selected sources and literature critically, - communication skills (oral and written expression), - skillful usage of information technology, skills in solving problems.
