Objectives and competences
A student is acquainted with
- different concepts of literature
- a verbal work of art in original and in an intercultural situation as a contact point of two cultures and two languages
- the meaning of literary translation as an intercultural interference, status and function of literary translation.
Content (Syllabus outline)
Lectures and seminar deal with the basic question, how translated literature functions in a certain literary (poly) system. The most important fact is, that within the national literary system (besides the literature of our authors) also a corpus of translated literature should exist, which can play an important role in this system, primarily in connection with the processes of evaluation and canonization in it. Because there are usually mutual interferential relations between different kinds of literature, whereas interference is mostly focused in one way (in just a few-examples it is one also focused in two ways), the original literature can have a strong influence on the target one and can be selected according to its prestige; the model with a cultural prestige has been selected.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
On completion of this course the student will be able to:
- understand the importance and meaning of writers, who stimulate and cultivate literary contacts, and of those spiritual channels, through which literary information can be intervened,
- understand a simple truth, that these spiritual movements are being directed by people, therefore it is necessary to realize „personal contacts among the writters”,
- demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts in cultural and literary theory,
- recognize the role of those processes in context of intercultural discourses,
- identify structural and functional aspects of literary systems and critically evaluate their role in intercultural contact,
- analyse patterns of intercultural communication using methods of literary theory and cultural history.
