Objectives and competences

At the forefront of this course are the students' communication skills in a foreign language. The student at the end of the semester - is able to communicate on relevant topics at the level A1; - can ask questions and give non-verbal and/or verbal appropriate answers concerning linguistic aspects and content; - understands the basic and important characteristics of the target language as well as some cross-linguistic characteristics; - understands some basic cultural and geographical characteristics of the German speaking area; - recognizes intercultural dimensions and is able to respond appropriately to them and consider them in communication.

Content (Syllabus outline)

- The thematic areas are linked to the fundamental areas of the students’ life and work, for example to information about themselves and other people, everyday life and individual areas of interest and their fields of study. - Vocabulary is at the level A1 after the EFL and is complemented with respect to specific areas of the students’ interests. - At the level of A1 they deal with only selected grammatical and other structures, through which the students are trained for basic communication in German. - Along with the language input, the cultural aspects of the target language, as well as some basic geographical and intercultural aspects play an important role as well.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding: - able to communicate on relevant topics at the level A1; - understanding of the basic and individually important linguistic and cross-linguistic characteristics of the target language; - Understanding of some basic cultural and geographical characteristics of the German speaking area; - Identifying the intercultural dimension and the appropriate use of communication in the foreign language.

Prerequisites for enrolment in the course: None. Prerequisites for successful completion of the course: A passing grade for each of the three requirements mentioned in in the Assessment box. The course is not available to students of the following study programs: • Translation – German, • German Studies, • German Language and Literature
