Objectives and competences
The objective of the course is to familiarize students with culturally marked elements and realities/concepts of English speaking countries and strengthen their sensibility for these specific items. Students will learn to recognize specific items in the field of politics, economy, law, geography, history, ethnics, religion and arts of the English-speaking countries. Students will develop knowledge in using translation strategies in specific translations.
The following competencies are developed:
• analysis of culturally marked elements and realities/concepts of English-speaking countries;
• communication competences;
• problem-solving;
• teamwork.
Content (Syllabus outline)
• Introduction to culturally marked elements and concepts of the English-speaking countries as a basis for adequate decisions in translation.
• Enhancement of sensitivity for culturally marked elements and concepts of English-speaking countries.
• Definition and description of the specificities of English-speaking countries, especially in politics, economy, law, geography, history, religion and arts.
•Historical overview of socio-political, geographical and ethnographic milestones of English-speaking countries and understanding of the underlying processes.
•Problem of translatability and untranslatability of culturally marked elements and concepts and understanding of problems and limitations regarding their transfer into the mother tongue.
• Available translation strategies to ensure that culturally marked elements and concepts of the English-speaking countries will be understandable to the target audience.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
• develop knowledge of specific items of the English-speaking countries in the field of politics, economy, law, geography, history and arts;
• identify culturally marked elements and concepts of English speaking countries;
• critical analysis of specific features of the English-speaking countries in the field of politics, economy, law, geography, history and arts and their comparison with the corresponding Slovene ones;
• historical reflection of culturally marked elements and concepts of the English-speaking countries;
• use of translation strategies for transferring culturally marked elements and concepts from the English-speaking countries into the Slovene context;
• understand the responsibility regarding translation of culturally marked elements and concepts.
