Objectives and competences

The objectives of the course are: • to acquire basic knowledge and methods in the field of syntax, • to identify possibilities for the usage of the acquired methods and knowledge for independent study and vocational work.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Subject and methods of syntax research, syntactic means and their importance for text production and comprehension. • Definition of the notions sentence, clause and utterance. • Sentence and clause typology according to form, position and function. • Operational methods for the identification of clause and sentence elements in Valency theory. • Word order of clauses, phrase and clause elements • Similarities and differences between German and Slovene syntax.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able to: • define the concepts of clause and sentence • define German clause and phrase elements • distinguish word classes and syntactic functions • apply methods for the identification of clause elements • define German syntactic patterns • apply German intonation patterns on clause level • identify German clause elements, modifiers and syntactic patterns according to the valency model • derive semantic and stylistic differences in texts from German syntactic patterns.

Transferable/Key Skills and other attributes: • communication skills: writing skills in the examination and homework assignments, oral skills in seminar discussion, • use of information technology: search for syntactic contents in the world wide web, use of special linguistic software in electronic dictionary and lexicons, • organization skills: to work as team leader during seminars, • solving analytical problems, • to work creatively and flexibly with others as part of a team during seminars.

Prerequisites to join the course: - Accomplished course German Language - Morphology. Prerequisites to course accomplishment: - Accomplished obligations given during tutorial and seminar.
