Objectives and competences

Objectives The objective of this course is to develop students’ competences to know, recognize, understand, analyse and use their linguistic repertoire in keeping with the intended function and cultural constraints of the source and target languages. The course develops students’ written and oral inter- and transcultural text competences, enhances their parallel text searching skills and analysis of culturemes, and encourages the acquisition of basic cultural knowledge and skills necessary for translators to become transcultural consultants. Competences • Knowing how to identify culturally-related problems in texts and formulate proposals for their solution • Knowing how to recognise function and meaning in language variations • Knowing how to produce a register appropriate to a given situation, for a particular document (written) or speech (oral) • Knowing how to understand and analyse the micro and macrostructure of a document and its overall coherence • Knowing how to grasp the presuppositions, the implicit, allusions, stereotypes and intertextual nature of a document • Knowing how to recognise and identify elements, values and references proper to the cultures represented • Knowing how to compose a document in accordance with the conventions of the genre and rhetorical standards

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Translation as (trans)cultural mediation: the metalanguage and theoretical starting points • Intercultural contrastive text analysis from the ethnological, economic, social, gender, etc. perspectives; review of selected text types; comparison of culturally-underpinned differences between the source and target texts. • Discussion: intercultural aspects of selected text types; how to overcome the binary divide • Presentation of arguments and solutions for culturally-related translation pitfalls. • Professionalism: translator as (inter)cultural mediator and consultant in an internationalized world • Parallel texts: detailed search and use, cultureme analysis.

On completion of this course the student will be able to: • Know, identify and analyse cultural characteristics of the text, • Support their translation with culturally-underpinned translation strategies , • Search for and find parallel texts.
