Objectives and competences
Students:
– become familiar with the key principles and concepts of multimodality,
– raise awareness of the historical changes in the semiotic landscape,
– get acquainted with theoretical and methodological tools for multimodal analysis,
– are introduced to with multimodal data and transcription.
Content (Syllabus outline)
The course introduces the basic theoretical frameworks that originally focused on language in use: systemic functional linguistics, social semiotics, conversation analysis. It highlights the differences, as well as the similarities between them in terms of historical development, basic concepts, research objectives, empirical focus, methods of analysis. It focuses on the multimodal framework developed by these approaches. It introduces students to multimodal analysis, which has become established as an innovative approach to representation, communication and interaction that studies not only language but also various other modes such as images, sound and music, gestures, the use of space, etc.
Learning and teaching methods
Lectures, group discussion, audio and video, practical exercises and activities, multimodal case studies.
The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Students should be able to:
– identify similarities and differences between theoretical and methodological approaches to multimodality,
– assess the possibilities and limitations of different modes,
– apply theoretical concepts of multimodality to different genres,
– analyze multimodal discourses in local and global contexts,
– utilize multimodal competences in different work and academic contexts.
