Objectives and competences
Course objective is to presents to the students the Old Church Slavic language as a basis for further study of historical grammar of the Slovene language and of other Slavic languages Lectures give an introduction overview of Indo European languages to Proto-Slavic language to Old Church Slavic language. A focal point is presented by the structure of the Old church Slavic language in monuments of various Slavic editions.
Content (Syllabus outline)
– From the Indo European do Proto Salvic and from Proto Slavic to the Old Church Slavic language.
– Work of Saint Cyril and Methodius.
– The origin of the Old-Church Slavic language and its relation to other Slavic languages
– Old-Church Slavic documents.
– Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabet.
– Phonetics.
– Morphology, paradigmatics of inflective word classes.
– Lexical characteristics.
– Reading of the Old-Church Slavic Cyrillic texts.
– Transcription from Cyrillic to Latin and from Latin to Cyrillic.
Learning and teaching methods
Lectures and homework.
Method of explanation, discussion.
Problem-based learning.
The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
After passing the examination the student will know the basics of development from Indo-European to Proto-Slavic, will know the characteristics of Old Church Slavic, will understand the laws of development, will be able to write and read Old Church Slavic Cyrillic.
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
The acquired knowledge is a necessary foundation for study of the Slovene dialects, in study of literary language for professional confrontation with the oldest and old monuments as well as with the synchronal inexplicable phenomena in contemporary speech and texts.
