Objectives and competences

- knowledge and comprehension on basic terms from history of architecture, its typology and terminology. - knowledge and comprehension on the basic term from theory of architecture and its development. - knowledge and comprehension on connections of architecture with other sorts of arts and their specifics. - knowledge and comprehension on basic literature in the handled field and development of reception of architecture. - knowledge and comprehension in methodological approaches to research and interpretation of architecture. - knowledge, comprehension and interpretation on the development of architectural creativity through historic periods. - knowledge, comprehension and interpretation on the recognising of historic styles in architecture and the broader connecting of monuments within individual eras.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The subject in the first part is designed as introduction into the comprehension and interpretation of architecture, and the basic emphasis is put on: - architecture as arts / architecture and arts; - terminology, typology, analysis; - reception of architecture: history of studying, interpretation; - architectural theory, sources; - authoral / anonymous architecture, historic / modern architecture; - specific (urbanism, landscape architecture) and border fields (ethnology); - methodology of research, protection and preservation of architectural monuments. In the second part a chronological overview of architecture follows: - architecture of antiquity (near East, Egypt, Greece, Rome) - old Christian and Byzantine architecture - medieval architecture (Romanticism, Gothicism) - architecture of Renaissance and Mannerism) - Baroque architecture - Neoclassicism and Historicism - Architecture of 20th and 21st century The subject is designed as chronological overview of the development of architecture, where the monuments are handled in a broader context of individual historic styles. Monuments on Slovenian territory are properly included in the overview of key monuments from individual eras.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

- Student will list and define basic terminology from the field of history of architecture. - Student will list, define, classify and interpret the most important architectural monuments. - Student will list, define, classify, interpret the basic literature in the field of history of architecture and different approaches to handling and validation of architecture. - Student will describe, define, classify, interpret architectural monuments of various stylistic periods. - Student will explain, classify, interpret selected monuments of architecture in a broader cultural and historical context.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

- Students will effectively apply the acquired knowledge in other subjects within the study program. - By understanding history of architecture, they will gain insight into the cultural landscape of Europe as a whole. - Familiarity with available literature and other sources will enable them to conduct independent research and successfully complete their academic requirements. - The knowledge acquired will provide students with a foundation to develop into cultured and intelligent individuals who appreciate and respect art and, by extension, human endeavors in general.
