Content (Syllabus outline)

I. Introduction 1. Term applied arts - craft of arts - industrial design - unique design 2. Studying, methods and installation - history of arts (arts and application, form and function, methods: comparative analysis, style analysis, expert methods) - "cultural history" - history (subject as material historic source) - archaeology (typology) - museology (museum subject, antique, artefact) - material culture (subject as document of everyday living) - methods of natural sciences 3. Short overview of theoretical thought in the field of applied arts: - before 19th century - new (reform) movements in 19th century - theoretical thought in 20th century - modern definition - theoretical thought in Slovenia II. History of applied arts (generally and in Slovenia) 4. Outline of character of materials according to individual eras regarding general frame of history of arts and specialties and methods of applied arts: - medeaval time and Rennaissance - Baroque - Classicism - Biedermayer - Secession - Art Deco - Functionalism - Modern and contemporary movements 5. Materials and characteristics (attributions, datations, etc.) - furniture, moveables - ceramics and glass - metal - textile - contemporary materials (plastics, etc.) 6. Visits to materials in museum deposits with practical work.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

- Students will effectively apply the acquired knowledge in other subjects within the study program. - By understanding history of applied art, they will gain insight into the cultural landscape of Europe as a whole. - Familiarity with available literature and other sources will enable them to conduct independent research and successfully complete their academic requirements. - The knowledge acquired will provide students with a foundation to develop into cultured and intelligent individuals who appreciate and respect art and, by extension, human endeavors in general.
