Objectives and competences

- present an overview of history of photography from its origins until today - present the different interpretations and significance of the most important photographs - present the main photographic techniques - introduce the ways of using photographs as documents in arthistorical work - instruct on basics of photography and archiving of photographs for arthistorical work.

Content (Syllabus outline)

- Beginnings of Photography, dagerotypia - Photography and documentations - Pictorialism in photography - Photography between two world wars - Photography after world war II - "Mariborski krog" - practice Overview of history of photography is designed chronolically. Among chosen cases from world history, cases of Slovenian patrimony are equally included. Qualitative peaks from history of photography in Slovenia are emphasised. Practice enables the student to inform on the basics of phtography and archiving photographies for the needs of work on history of arts.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

- the student recognizes, identifies and interprets the main photographic works from the global and Slovenian history of photography - describes the development of main directions in the history of photography and defines their characteristics - compares and differentiates the main directions and/or photographs - explains the different meanings of photography for the development of visual arts - explains the characteristics of the most important photographic techniques and their evolution through history - is able to take documentary/topographic photographs of architectural objects and works of art and knows how to archive it for purposes of arthistorical research.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

- Students will effectively apply the acquired knowledge in other subjects within the study program. - By understanding history of photography, they will gain insight into the cultural landscape of Europe as a whole. - Through the practical part of the course, they will acquire the fundamentals of topographic photography. - Familiarity with available literature and other sources will enable them to conduct independent research and successfully complete their academic requirements. - The knowledge acquired will provide students with a foundation to develop into cultured and intelligent individuals who appreciate and respect art and, by extension, human endeavors in general.
