Objectives and competences

- knowledge of the history of visual arts from mid-18th to the early 20th century; -knowledge of the literature and sources for studying the history of art and architecture from mid-18th to the early 20th century; - recognition, definition, description, classification of artworks from mid-18th to the early 20th century; -comprehension and explanation of artworks from mid-18th to the early 20th century in a broader cultural and historical context.

Content (Syllabus outline)

- Arts of baroque in Italy and Spain - Arts of baroque in Flander and in the Netherlands - Arts of baroque in France and England - Arts of second half of 17th and 18th century in Central Europe - Roccoco - Neoclassicism and Romantics - Realism and Impressionism - Post-Impressionism, symbolism and Secession The general overview is concepted chronologically. Among chosen cases from world history of arts equal cases of the Slovenian patrimony are included. Emphasis is put on the understanding of art flows and influences. Arts phenomena are handled in a broader cultural context.

Learning and teaching methods

- lectures with projection; - tutorial; - visits of monuments in situ, in museums and galleries; - presentations of students’ seminar works.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

- the student will recall facts and basic concepts of the history of visual arts in the period from mid-18th until early 20th century; - the student will know, find out, classify, interpret the literature and sources for studying the history of art and architecture from mid-18th until early 20th century; - the student will recognise, define, describe, classify the works of architecture, sculpture, painting and applied arts from mid-18th until early 20th century; - the student will understand, explain and interpret the artworks from mid-18th until early 20th century in a broader cultural and historical context.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

- obtained knowledge will be used by the student in other subjects of the study programme History of Arts; - with basic knowledge on ancient eras he or she will be enabled to understand arts in 20th and 21st century; - with basic knowledge on ancient eras he or she will be enabled to understand history of architecture, applied arts, painting and sculpturing; - with basic knowledge on ancient eras he or she will develop basic capabilities for practical work in institutions for studying and protection of cultural heritage; - with the overview over the accessible literature and other sources, he or she will be enabled to independent research and qualitative working out of seminar works on the problems of the mentioned era.
