Objectives and competences

- knowledge of the history of visual arts from mid-18th to the early 20th century; -knowledge of the literature and sources for studying the history of art and architecture from mid-18th to the early 20th century; - recognition, definition, description, classification of artworks from mid-18th to the early 20th century; -comprehension and explanation of artworks from mid-18th to the early 20th century in a broader cultural and historical context.

Content (Syllabus outline)

- Neoclassicism and Romantics - Historicism - Realism and Impressionism - Post-Impressionism, symbolism and Secession The general overview is concepted chronologically. Among chosen cases from world history of arts equal cases of the Slovenian patrimony are included. Emphasis is put on the understanding of art flows and influences. Arts phenomena are handled in a broader cultural context.

Learning and teaching methods

- lectures with projection; - tutorial; - visits of monuments in situ, in museums and galleries; - presentations of students’ seminar works.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

- the student will recall facts and basic concepts of the history of visual arts in the period from mid-18th until early 20th century; - the student will know, find out, classify, interpret the literature and sources for studying the history of art and architecture from mid-18th until early 20th century; - the student will recognise, define, describe, classify the works of architecture, sculpture, painting and applied arts from mid-18th until early 20th century; - the student will understand, explain and interpret the artworks from mid-18th until early 20th century in a broader cultural and historical context.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

- Students will effectively apply the acquired knowledge in other subjects within the study program. - By understanding ar tof the long 19th century, they will gain insight into the cultural landscape of Europe as a whole. - Familiarity with available literature and other sources will enable them to conduct independent research and successfully complete their academic requirements. - The knowledge acquired will provide students with a foundation to develop into cultured and intelligent individuals who appreciate and respect art and, by extension, human endeavors in general.
