Objectives and competences

- Knowledge of selected medieval architectural, sculptural and painted artworks in Slovenia - Knowledge of basic literature and specifics of medieval art - Recognition, distinction, description, explanation, and identification of different artistic phenomena and characteristics in Middle Ages - Understanding and interpretation of selected medieval artworks and their background context

Content (Syllabus outline)

- selected themes from architecture, sculpturing and painting of early, high and late medeaval times - relation between painting and word in medeaval times - literary sources of medeaval arts - sacral and prophanity in medeaval arts - influence of antique legacy on medeaval arts - meaning of persons placing orders in medeaval times - relations between art centres and periphery Based on selected complexes from medeaval architecture, sculpturing and painting previously obtained knowledge of artistic events in medeaval times will be deepened. Emphasis is put on understanding of events in history of arts regarding the flow of artistic flows and influences, the attention is put to diversity of art production in Europe. Phenomena of arts are handled in a broader cultural context, the role of subscribers and relations between art centres and periphery is emphasized. Selected cases are part of Slovenian and Western European cultural heritage.

- lectures with projection - tutorial - visits of monuments in situ, in museums and galleries - discussion on methodological approaches to medieval arts - discussion on selected texts - presentations of students’ seminar works

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

- the student will list, describe, explain, recognise and name several key medieval artworks of architecture, sculpture and painting in the territory of today’s Slovenia - the student will classify, define, present and sum up specifics of medieval art and its research - the student will recognise, differ, explain and identify different artistic phenomena and characteristics of medieval art - the student will clarify, classify and interpret selected medieval artworks and the background context

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

- Students will effectively apply the acquired knowledge in other subjects within the study program. - By understanding important selected chapters from history of medieval art, they will gain insight into the cultural landscape of Europe as a whole. - Familiarity with available literature and other sources will enable them to conduct independent research and successfully complete their academic requirements. - The knowledge acquired will provide students with a foundation to develop into cultured and intelligent individuals who appreciate and respect art and, by extension, human endeavors in general.
