Objectives and competences

- Deepen the knowledge of the students concerning history of arts in the 19th century, - developing the students’ basic capability for research of the named era regarding the accessible literature and other sources, - developing the students’ basic capabilities of validation, analising and interpretation of art works emphasising the key phenomena for understanding the art of the 20th century, - developing the students’ basic capabilities of placing artistic pieces from the mentioned era into a broader cultural context. - Adopted knowledge will be used by the students in other subjects from the study programme. - By deepened knowledge of arts in this era, they will be enabled to understand arts of 20th and 21st century and all its fields. - By deepened knowledge of arts of that timw they will improve capabilities for later work in institutions for prevention and protection of mobile and immobile cultural heritage and in media. - By widened overview over accessible literature and other sources they will enlarge possibilities to independent research and qualitative production of seminar works on the problem of the mentioned era.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The subject is supposed to inform students on problems of arts of 19th century. Knowledge is obtained by exact study on individual breaking examples of arts from that time. Through them they will get to know the essence of changes from fine arts speech between the end of baroque or rococo and beginning of modern arts. By analysis of conceptual, iconographic, semiotic, psychic and contextual characterstic characters they will get to know decisive factors contributing to these changes: events in society, politics and ideology, changes in ways of life and thinking, all other sorts of arts in the field of literature and music, philosophy, etc. Students are going to deepen the broader social, political, cultural and ideological context of the handled time and understand the influence of most important historic events (French Revolution 1789, 1848, etc.) on hte material and spiritual status and on the final consequences for history of arts, as well. They will get to know contemporary social and economic phenomena (socialism, industrialisation) and their meaning for creations by individuals (e.g. Courbet) and movements (e.g. Impressionalism). They will learn what complex studies of history of arts of a certain work, artist or phenomenon means.

Learning and teaching methods

- lectures with AV projections; - tutorial; - visiting exhibitions and other events connected with themes and discussions; - excursions with visits to most important exhibitions and collections of arts from 19th century; - writing seminar works; - joint case studies; - analyses of theoretical and hermeneutic discourses.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

- Students will effectively apply the acquired knowledge in other subjects within the study program. - By understanding important selected chapters from 19th century art, they will gain insight into the cultural landscape of Europe as a whole. - Familiarity with available literature and other sources will enable them to conduct independent research and successfully complete their academic requirements. - The knowledge acquired will provide students with a foundation to develop into cultured and intelligent individuals who appreciate and respect art and, by extension, human endeavors in general.
