Content (Syllabus outline)

Chapters will be selected from the beginnings and peaks of modernism and post-modernism. There, by methodology of historic anthropology of image, the key problems of beginnings and development of both directions marking art of these times in which we still live, will be presented. Total analyses will first deal with "modernism before modernism", elements of arts as reductionism and minimalisation, stressing of the clean idea on the account of manual work, abstraction of forms and colours, non-mimetic piling up of colours, denial of classic rennaissance of perspective and flating the picture field etc. announcing development of modernism. Especially, late Cezanne, Kandinski and expressionism, Picasso and cubism are handled. Each phenomenon and creator will be interpreted as beginning of certain approaches and then development of these elements till their peak will be followed. In the same way, we will deal with post-modernism. Its sources will be shown in phenomena as there is dadaism, arte povera and conceptualism and creation by Duchamp, Beuys and Warhole as starters of the movement and Lyotard and Jameson as its theoretical companions will be stressed. Attention will be paid also to the question of avantgarde and its versions. Especially, also names and phenomena in Slovenian arts as Jakopič, Pregelj, Stupica, OHO, etc. Will be mentioned.

Learning and teaching methods

- lectures with AV-presentations; - tutorial; - visiting exhibitions and other events connected with themes and discussions; - excursions with visits to most important exhibitions and collections of arts of the period; - writing seminar works; - joint case studies; - analyses of theoretical and hermeneutic discourses.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

- Students will effectively apply the acquired knowledge in other subjects within the study program. - By understanding important selected chapters from 20th and 21st century art, they will gain insight into the cultural landscape of Europe as a whole. - Familiarity with available literature and other sources will enable them to conduct independent research and successfully complete their academic requirements. - The knowledge acquired will provide students with a foundation to develop into cultured and intelligent individuals who appreciate and respect art and, by extension, human endeavors in general.
