Objectives and competences

Objectives: • to apply the basic conceptions of intercultural research to the German speaking area; • to evaluate the situation of german language today in Europe and wider and to evaluate its international function; • to interprete inner heterogeneousness of the German speaking area; • to evaluate the appropriateness of the subdisciplines of intercultural German studies, particulary the sociolinguistic, pragmatic and textlinguistic aspect, for the concrete research. Competences: - generally: communication skills (writing and speaking), using information technology (finding information on the internet, using other sources like libraries and partly archives). - specific: knowledge and understanding can be transfered to other research fields, provided in the linguistic blocks of the programm and within the framework of the future employments

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Culture and language. Language and mentality. Cultural differences and symmetries. • Language research from intercultural points of view (language in cultural/ intercultural / comparative contexts, dialogue, empathy, taboo, distance, foreigness). • German language worldwide and in European framework (sociolinguistics and language policies). • Heterogeneousness of the German speaking area (pluricentricity, German as a minority language). • Intercultural dimensions of traditional linguistic discipline (sociolinguistical, pragmatical and textlinguistical views).

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able: to apply the basic conceptions of intecultural research in case of german language, to value the situation of German in wider context as well as the divergence inside the german language speaking area, to value the basic characteristics of the subdisciplines of intercultural German studies, particulary the sociolinguistic, pragmatic and textlinguistic aspect, for the concrete research.
