Objectives and competences
The objective of this course is to acquaint
Students with
• media landscape in german speaking countries
• changing principles of communication in new media
• methods of linguistic and literary interpretation of media texts
• basic theoretical, stuctural and functional aspects of popular culture and with its impact on linguistic and literary systems
Content (Syllabus outline)
The subject deals with the popular culture from linguistic and literary-theoretical poit of view emphasizing the following contents:
• Media communication, basic aspects
• Print media, functional styles and text types
• new media, basic characteristics
• methods of language analyses and interpretation of media texts
• problems of valuation of (pop)cultural / literary phenomena: canonisation
• Comercialisation, massiveness and globalisation of cultural and literary phenomena in traditional and new media.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
On completion of this course the student will be able to
demonstrate knowledge of basic concepts in theory of popular culture,
recognize the role of those processes in context of intercultural discourses,
show the knowledge of the German media
recognize the characteristics of the media language and selected media text types
use linguistic and cultural methods in analyzing media communication
