Objectives and competences
The objectives of the course are to:
• learn pragmalinguistic approaches for discourse analysis,
• refine knowledge of the communicative functions of linguistic and non-linguistic elements,
• approach pragmalinguistic methods for discovering intercultural and interlingual differences in German and Slovenian language communities
• use pragmalinguistic approaches in other fields of study.
Content (Syllabus outline)
• Aims and tasks of pragmalinguistic disciplines
• The notions of discourse and contrastive discourse analysis
• Text-producing and text-decoding cognitive strategies in the communication process
• Models, classifications and methods for pragmalinguistic text analysis and their contribution to the visualization of intercultural differences: speech acts, conversational maxims, conversational analysis, discourse markers, indexical signs, thematic progression types
• Contrastive discourse analysis of selected German and Slovenian texts from different sources (TV talk shows, documentaries, internet pages, commercial clips and brochures)

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
On completion of this course the student will be able:
• distinguish linguistic elements according to their communicative function in texts (with emphasis on linguistic markers or expressions of opinions, emotions and values)
• identify the values of text participants and connected goals
• identify strategies and argument types used by text participants for approaching their goals
• evaluate the similarities and differences of opinions and arguments in German and Slovene texts on controversially discussed social topics.
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
communication skills: writing skills in seminar paper production and homework assignments, oral skills in paper presentation and discussion,
use of information technology: search for linguistic contents in the world wide web, use of special linguistic software and electronic parallel text corpora,
organization skills: to work as team leader during seminars,
solving analytical problems,
to work creatively and flexibly with others as part of a team during seminars.
