Objectives and competences

Objectives: • To transfer the knowledge of the language varieties to the field of language contacts with the focus on modern trends. • To connect the history of language contacts between German and Slovene as well as the possibilities of typological influences regarding levels of language with the focus on the forms of present contacts. • To interprete und evaluate the implementation of language policies of EU in Austria and Slovenia. • To analyse the funcional multilingualism, primaly on the basis of examples of present language use.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Language varieties (brief overview), austrian German and the varieties. Modern trends. Impact of social contexts on the language. Some aspects of the functional grammar. • Characteristics of language varieties, conditions and origins, chances, types. • History of contacts between German and Slovene, possibilities of typological influence regarding varieties and level of language. • Present forms of language contacts between German and Slovene, role of the social contexts. • Implementation of the language policies of the EU in Austria and Slovenia. • Multilingualism: modern view and scientific research. Functional multilingualism. • Examples of the language use. Future trends.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

On completion of this course the student will be able: to transfer the knowledge of the varieties to the research fields of language contacts, to interprete and value the implementation of the language policies in the EU and in Austria, Slovenia and Germany, to analyse the examples of functional multilingualism and to predict future trends

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

generally: communication skills (writing and speaking), using information technology (finding information on the internet, using other sources like libraries and partly archives). specific: knowledge and understanding can be transfered to other research fields like interculturality, literature and text production. Competences can be used within the framework of future employments in the region.
