Objectives and competences
The objective of this course is to familiarize students with basic concepts and techniques relating to screen translation and their application in practice, with emphasis on subtitling and dubbing.
Competences:
• the ability to collect and organize knowledge;
• ability to use sources of information technology;
• ability to distinguish functions and meanings in language variations;
• ability to produce translations in linguistic registers appropriate to situation and text type;
Content (Syllabus outline)
Short history of subtitling and dubbing.
Linguistic and non-linguistic factors conditioning subtitling, dubbing and voice-over in comparison to other modes of translation.
Linguistic and medial principles of subtitling and dubbing: solving the conflict between the linguistic tendencies of text producer and recipient.
Advantages and disadvantages of subtitling and dubbing.
Subtitling for hearing-impaired persons.
Textlinguistic and stylistic considerations in subtitling and dubbing.
Subtitling of different kinds of TV productions and films.
Subtitling via a secondary language.
Translating via voice recordings.

On completion of this course the student will be able:
• to know basic concepts and techniques of screen translation;
• to identify and critically consider individual factors influencing screen translation;
• to use special techniques of screen translating in practice;
• to translate different kinds of screen productions.
