Objectives and competences

The course focuses on translating advanced texts in the Slovene-German language pair, as well as post-editing and revising machine-translated texts or texts generated by artificial intelligence (e.g., large language models). Emphasis is placed on contrastive analysis, analysing errors in machine-generated translations, and recognizing cultural and other differences to help students justify their translation choices. Students will also gain skills in basic terminological work and the use of modern electronic translation tools to meet the needs of the technology-supported contemporary language industry effectively. Competences: • knowing how to produce a translation appropriate to the genre conventions and rhetorical standards; • knowing how to create a translation appropriate to the identified aim/skopos; • knowing how to define the necessary translation strategies and processes; • knowing how to recognise and identify elements, values and references proper to both cultures represented; • knowing how to identify and address information and documentation needs, and developing strategies for conducting documentary and terminological research; • knowing how to search for (data mining), extract, process, and manage information for a specific task knowing how to use translation technology and tools (e.g., translation platforms, translation memories, translation engines, large language models, terminology software, electronic corpora, and online dictionaries, etc.)

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Translation and post-editing of machine-created (eg. by translation engines, LLMs) advanced texts from Slovene to English and vice versa • Contrastive analysis in the source and target languages. • Cultural differences between Slovenia and the English-speaking countries in the context of genre conventions. • Translation argumentation in terms of text type categories, target audiences, and cultural specifics of the English-Slovene language pair • Translation research and use of parallel texts and sources • Preparation of specialised glossaries • Use of translation techonology and tools.

• student is able to translate advanced texts from Slovene to English and vice versa appropriate to the genre conventions and rhetorical standards; • student is able to identify the possible translation skopoi; • student knows how to defend his or her translation choices; • student finds information; • student knows how to use of translation technology and tools.
