Objectives and competences

The objective of the course is to introduce students to fundamental concepts and processes of translation analysis, translation strategies to independently arrive at appropriate and adequate translation solutions. The course develops the following competences: - Mastering the appropriate metalanguage, - Knowing how to define translation stages and strategies, - Knowing how to define and evaluate translation problems and find appropriate strategies and solutions, - Knowing how to justify one's translation choices and decisions, - Knowing how to recognise function and meaning in language variations, - Knowing how to create and offer a translation appropriate to the client's request, i.e. to the aim/skopos and to the translation situation, - Knowing how to understand and analyse the macrostructure of a document and its overall coherence, - Knowing how to grasp the presuppositions, the implicit, allusions, stereotypes and intertextual nature of a document, - Knowing how to compose a document in accordance with the conventions of the genre and rhetorical standards, - Being aware of the social roles of the translator.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Equivalence as translation concept and the problem of non-equivalence • Equivalence at different translation levels(lexical, above lexical, grammatical, textual, pragmatic) • Functional analysis: intra and extra textual features • Discourse analysis in translation context • Translation strategies • Translation brief • Translator’s ethics and morality

• Seminar • Individual and group work • Case studies The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding: On the completion of the course students will be: - Able to use the appropriate metalanguage, - Able to define fundamental translation problems, stages and strategies, - Justify their translation choices and decisions, - Create and offer a translation appropriate to the client's request, - Compose a document in accordance with the conventions of the genre
