Objectives and competences
The aim of the course is to provide the students with a solid knowledge of theoretical and applied linguistics, pointing out its relevance for teaching English. This refers to their understadning of second language acquisition principles as well as their awareness of the role that extralinguistic factors (sociolinguistic, pragmatic and intercultural) play in teaching English. An additional objective is to raise their awareness about the differences between the gramamar of written and spoken English and about the impact of language variation and language change on the choice of various approaches and methods in teaching English (tested on practical examples of teaching selected grammar structures).
Content (Syllabus outline)
• Essential linguistic concepts and linguistic theory vs. language teaching practice
• Various approaches to studying English linguistics and their impact on the teaching methods
• Applied linguistics with emphasis on second language acquisition, sociolinguistics and pragmatics in as far as they are relevant to the teaching of English to speakers of other languages
• The intercultural element in teaching of English to speakers of other languages (focusing on the comparison between Slovene culture and the culture of the UK and the US)
• Prescriptive vs. descriptive grammar of English
• Deductive vs. inductive approach to teaching English grammar
• Linguistic structure vs. function
• Written vs. spoken grammar of English
• Practical examples of teaching selected linguistic/grammar topics in English
• The relevance of language variation and language change for teaching English

Knowledge and understanding:
• knowledge of basic linguistic concepts and understanding of the connection between linguistic theory and practical teaching of English

• understanding the relevance of sociolinguistic, pragmatic and intercultural factors for teaching English
• understandig the principles of second language acquistion
• distinguishing between prescriptive and descriptive grammar, between structure and function, and between written and spoken grammar of English
