Objectives and competences
Student gets in detail knowledge about fundamental European literature works; knows the circumstances of their origin; is able to analyze literary procedures used in particular work and to judge their significance for literature's development; He /eshe knows different interpretations and reception history of selected literary works.
Content (Syllabus outline)
Subject deals with literary canon within European literature, meaning those literary works which have gained the significance of great, classical texts. The works discussed are by so called exemplary authors from antiquity on (ie. Homer, Vergil, Dante, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Goethe, Dostojevski, Joyce), in a way that literary characteristics which are discussed are those, which in the past have substantialy influenced judgement about supreme literary works. Analysis and interpretations of selected literary works are presented. By doing so the special relevance is given to the history of their reception. The expectation horizon of the modern reader is being discussed. Special emphasisi is dedicated to significance of exemplary authors in literature classes at different education levels.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Student understands the process of literary work canonisation; understands the examplary authoe concept; knows ahow to link different interpretations with reader's horizon; understands how canonised work evaluation functions from the contemporary reader stand point.

Student is able to recognise literary work's qualities and to determine whether it is a canon text.
