Objectives and competences
-To acquaint the students with the relation between image and various texts;
- to deepen the knowledge about literature in visual art, about tradition in literature and visual art, contemporary literature and visual art etc.;
- to develop the student’s ability for independent work with literature;
- to develop the student’s ability of valuating, analysing and interpreting the works of visual art from the point of their relation to the texts;
- to stimulate the students towards independent relation and reflection about the problems.
Content (Syllabus outline)
The subject offers an insight into the broad topic of the commissioning of works of art, patronage, collecting and reception of art. It provides theoretical bases for the understanding of and research into the theme, and by means of selected cases it deepens practical or specific knowledge from the stated sphere. The role of the clients, patrons and other potential recipients in the creation and visual appearance of works of art.
Ways, reasons and functions of art collecting (particularly sculptures, paintings and prints), sorts of collections, the impact of fashion, taste, funds, (non-)originality of artworks, art market, question of accessibility, founding and significance of (national) museums. Conditions and possibilities of reception of art from antiquity until the present day, relationship between a work of art and its spectator from the viewpoint of reception aesthetics and psychology and the social context of the time.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Knowledge and understanding:
- students will acquire fundamental skills and deepen their knowledge about patronage, collecting and reception of art;
- they will be acquainted with basic literature and they will develop abilities for autonomous research of the stated topic;
- they will develop the ability to evaluate, analyse and interpret works of art from the viewpoint of their relation to the patrons, collectors, art market, and audience;
-they will develop the ability to connect and understand critically the relation between artists and clients, artists and art market, artworks and their keeping and audiences.

- The students will use the acquainted knowledge efficiently in other subjects of the study program;
- the knowledge of different forms of interconnectedness between artworks, clients, art market, museums and audiences will enable them to understand European art and culture from antiquity until the present day:
- through delving into the topic they will develop basic abilities for practical work in the institutions for the research into cultural heritage, in museums and galleries, etc.;
- Having view to accessible literature and other sources, it will be easier for students to research independently and to finish prescribed study obligations in good quality.
- The knowledge is going to give students a good basis to develop into cultural and intelligent personalities, who appraise and respect the art and human efforts in general.
