Content (Syllabus outline)
Art is an important media for preserving memory (historical, national, transnational); this extension of art reflects most clearly in erecting public monuments, in historical painting, photography, comics, caricature, but also in all other fields of art, may be even concealed. The culture of memory is influenced by national and other myths as well as actual social situation. The subject will point out to particularities, congenialities and differences in the culture of memory, as it reflects in art; the exposed examples will be from Slovene and from patrimonies in the states of ex-Yugoslavia and in the states of South-East Europe. We shall stress the art in the 19th and 20th century and point out especially the historically crucial periods, such as national conflicts in the second half of the 19th century, World War I, decay of Austro-Hungarian Empire, World War II, “Tito’s Yugoslavia” and the phenomena of its decay. The subject is of interdisciplinary character; it will encourage the students to supplement the content of the subject with knowledge from other subjects of their study program.
