Objectives and competences

The primary objective is achieved when students: • identify, quantify, analyze and evaluate complex links between different spheres of economy, politics, civil society in different spatio-temporal windows • link current environmental and socio-economic issues

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. The socio-economic databases (positive and negative properties of such data sets) 2. Socio-economic indicators and the geographical space from the global, regional and local perspective, the use of spatial databases for the identification of spatial patterns in different economic systems 3. Proxy approaches for measuring economic growth (remote sensing and economic development). 4. Problems of agro-systems in the light of economic development, the process of globalization and climate change. Agri-environmental policies in the 21st century. 5. The ecological footprint concept from the perspective of economic development. 6. Geographic Information Systems technology and Economic Geography.

Learning and teaching methods

-lectures -audio-visual presentations -case-studies -active group/ team work The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

• Students find and use quantitative indicators to evaluate a complex human footprint as a consequence of its impact on the environment through various spheres of human activity (economy, politics, environment, society). • They use different methodological approaches to address and solve such spatial problems.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Main stress is analysis of the complex interactions between economy, environment and society.
