Objectives and competences

Student is able to analyze important occurences in European medieval history, political and economic processes, social relationships, life, work and of thinking, about scientific achievements. He develops the ability to visualize the relations and reciprocal influence between European and regional history, he gains the ability to distinguish between essential and inessential historical processes and between global cultural changes. He is able to evaluate medieval cultural, religious and other characteristics of individual civilizations and gains the capability of critical and tolerant assessment of differences between them.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Subject deals with the history of northern, middle, western, eastern Europe and the Mediteranean from the fall of Roman Empire at the end of the 5th century until the end of the Middle Ages or until the period of discoveries. It is devided into two parts: the period of Early and Late Middle Ages. First part defines the periodization of treated period and deals with the main components of feudal social system, migration of peoples and the formation of medieval countries, where the emphasis is on development of Franconian state and on formation and development of German state as well as on European cultural occurences. Second part deals with further development of European countries and the formation of new countries, reconqista, economy and the formation of towns, struggle between papacy and the Holy Roman Empire, cultural and spiritual life in late medieval and early renaissance Europe.

Learning and teaching methods

Explanation, work with sources, seminar, individual study, seminar assignment, presentation of seminar assignment, discussion. The information and communications technology is used for educational purposes in the teaching and learning process.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

To be able to analyze a large number of processes in the medieval period. To be capable to evaluate the developmental differences between European regions of that time and of the contributions of the Middle Ages for the lift of human culture and art.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Student acquires capabilities of comparative treatment of individual ethnical elements and countries or historical processes at all. He gains the ability to critically assess all forms of messages that have the value of historical sources and to distinguish between inducements, motives and consequences considering the interdependence of different occurences, continuity and discrepancies in the historical development.

Preknowledge from subject Roman History and the Slovene Territory in Antiquity Conditions for prerequisits: Completed seminar assignment is a prerequisit for accession to the written examination.
