Objectives and competences
The objective of this course is that students will be able to describe, use, analyze and synthesize various timber structural systems.
Content (Syllabus outline)
Types of timber buildings.
Multi-levels timber frames; sway and non-sway.
Curved glue-laminated beams.
Timber trusses; shapes of timber trusses, analytical and approximate design methods with attention on joint flexibility.
Prefabricated timber walls; design methods, influence of mechanical fasteners and coating boards.
Prefabricated timber plates.
Timber bridges.
Learning and teaching methods
1st Chapter mostly with Power Point presentations.
Other chapters mostly with a chalk on a blackboard.
Continuative using of the prescribed literature with emphasis on Eurocode 5 standard.
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Knowledge and understanding:
Upon completion of this course, the student is able to independently make a structural design and static analysis of simple and complicated multi-storey timber buildings.
Transferable / Key Skills and other attributes:
Communication skills: written expression in the preparation of a project work and oral expression in the presentation of a project work.
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
