Objectives and competences

At the end of this course, students will understand the course of inner forces, displacements, strains and stresses in walls, plates and shells. They will develop analytical thinking in solving engineering problems in the field of mechanics of plates and shells and will be able to derive corresponding equations. They will be able to solve general problems of mechanics of plates and shells.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Introduction Constitutive relations for plane stress state Review of classical theory and analysis of walls, plates and shells Analytical methods for solving plates and shells Numerical methods for solving plates and shells anisotropic plates Plates under combined lateral and in-plane loads Cooling towers and storage tanks : Examples of calculation of plates and shells

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures in the classroom, supported by computer projection of the course material and simultaneous additional explanation of more complex details on the blackboard. Tutorial exercises by solving sample problems.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: -model different engineering problems in the field of mechanics of plates and shells by using suitable mathematical models -determine maximum response values of the structure for different types of loads Transferable/Key Skills and other attributes: -Communication skills: written professional manner at written examination and oral professional manner at oral examination, -Utilisation of acquired knowledge: systematically prepare an appropriate mathematical model and perform an analysis of plate or shell structure with a thorough understanding of the problem, -Reševanje problemov: ability to understand structural behavior and mathematically model the response of plate and shell structures.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Ability of structural modelling and analysis of arbitrary plate or shell structure.
