Objectives and competences

The objective of this course is for students to be able to design and analyse steel trusses, different steel floor structures, steel frames, a single strorey steel halls, structural systems of timber buildings, mounting timber frame-panel system and details.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Steel trusses, castellated and Vierendell beams, built-up compression members; Steel frames, frame design, actions, frame imperfections, frame stability, sway and non-sway modes, braced and unbraced frames, buckling lenghts of elements; Industrial buildings, designs, types, stability, bracing, actions, connections, supports, foundations; Structural systems of timber buildings, massive system, skeletal system, frame system; Mounting timber frame-panel system, basic advantages and disadvantages; Details in timber construction.

Learning and teaching methods

Classical lectures, using of a computer and overhead.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and Understanding: On completion of this course the student will be able to design and analyse: • steel trusses, • different steel floor structures, • steel frames, • a single strorey steel halls, • structural systems of timber buildings, • mounting timber frame-panel system, • details. Transferable/Key Skills and other attributes: Communication skills: written expression at written examination and oral expression at oral examination.

This subject is a basic for additional understanding of steel and timber buildings.
