Objectives and competences

The objective of this course is for students to understand the aspects of sustainability, be able to determine the types of quality of sustainable construction and conduct a life cycle assessment by determining the environmental performance for smaller reference building.

Content (Syllabus outline)

Lectures: 1. Basic terms: ? sustainability – main aspects ? sustainable development ? sustainable design 2. Indicators of Sustainable construction 3. Climate change and buildings 4. Energy resources and technologies of exploitation of renewable sources 5. Energy in buildings 6. Types of quality related to sustainable constructions ? ecological quality ? economic quality ? socio-cultural and functional quality 7. Building ecology and building biology 8. Indoor environment quality 9. Life cycle assesment and environmental impacts 10. Building certification Exercises: ? Analysis of reference cases ? Environmental assesment of building For the implementation of practical part- exercises the use of the following software tools is determined: Daylight Visualizer, PHPP, Baubook, eco2 soft

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures and exercise are carried out with he following teaching methods: - powerpoint projection or display - discussion, - work with photographs, drawings - case study Seminar: - implementation of intermediate presentations with analysis of project work Exercises are carried out with he following teaching methods: - individual work / group work, - learning of software tools usage Some parts of lectures can be provide by experts from practice selected by the course lecturer

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: ? describe aspects of sustainability, ? explain the principles of sustainable development, ? determine the types of quality of sustainable constructions, ? define the parameters of construction ecology and construction biology, ? assess the environmental balance of smaller reference building. Transferable / Key Skills and other attributes: ? Communication skills: oral defense of a seminar work, intermediate presentations of a seminar work. ? Use of information technology: use of software tools for calculation of energy efficiency and environmental assesment of buildings.
