Objectives and competences

The aim of the subject is to assure a student to be capable in analyzing timber structures and their elements including connections according to European norm (Eurocode 5). The scope includes tension, compress, bending, shear and torsion of timber elements at the ultimate and serviceability limit state.

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. Timber buildings in the world. 2. Growth, physical and mechanical characteristics of solid and glued timber, cross-laminated timber and timber products. 3. Classification of solid and glued timber. 4. Mechanical fasteners; types of fasteners (nails, bolts, staples, screws, dowels, ...), lateral and axial resistance, slip modulus, stiffness in the connecting area. 5. Basic concepts for timber cross-section dimensioning according to Eurocode 5 standards (Ultimate and Serviceability Limit State); Tension, compression with buckling, bending and bending with axial force, shear, torsion and combination of torsion and shear. 6. Glue-laminated timber.

Learning and teaching methods

1., 2., 3. and 6. Chapter mostly with Power Point presentations. 4. and 5. Chapter mostly with a chalk on a blackboard. Continuative using of the prescribed literature with emphasis on Eurocode 5 standard

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

After the final exam a student is capable individually to dimension a timber element cross-section, including solid and glued timber, and be able in designing simple timber connections

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
