Objectives and competences

The objective of this course is for students to be able to describe, apply and analyze basic principles of safety concepts and concepts of modeling of engineering structures in accordance with European regulations (Eurocodes) and national norms

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. Basic information about European standards from the field of building structures. 2. General principles of structural design: basic requirements, ultimate and serviceability limit state design, national standards and Eurocodes. 3. Superposition of actions for ultimate limit states and serviceability limit states. Safety factors. 4. Models of structural loads: classification of loads according to time of action. 5. Dead load, live load, snow load, wind load, seismic load, temperature and earth pressure using national standards and Eurocodes. Basic information about earthquake safety design of building structures (design of structures according to floor-plan and height).

Learning and teaching methods

Mostly with a chalk on a blackboard supported with figures and photos with Power Point programme. Continuative using of the prescribed literature with emphasis on Eurocode 1 and Eurocode 8 standards and national codes.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to design a building structure taking into account all expected loads and their combinations

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

Communication skills: written expression at written examination and oral expression at oral examination.
