Objectives and competences

The aim of this course is for students to: To understand technical and functional capabilities of modern information and telecommunication technologies.

Content (Syllabus outline)

ITS – definitions, concepts, classifications, architectures, standardization. ITS services and solutions, state of the art (travel and traffic information, public transport management, fleet & freight management, demand management, road and road traffic management, cooperative driving etc.). ITS; selected chapters Data models, data standards, spatial databases; geo-referencing / geo-coding in transportation. Technologies for automatic detection, classification (AVC), identification (AVI), location (AVL), GPS/GSM based tracing and navigation, electronic ticketing (ETS), e-payment, environmental monitoring and controlling, electronic toll collection (ETC), image processing. Intelligent vehicle systems (IVS). Case studies integrated ITS systems.

Learning and teaching methods

Lectures, Semminar – selected topics Field/laboratory practice Excursion

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

To understand the properties (potentials and limits) of information and telematics technologies in solving the planning, management and control, safety and security, environmental tasks in transportation engineering.

Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes

The knowledge and skills can be implemented in complex transportation engineering tasks as: “Integrated urban traffic planning and management”, “Transportation policy enforcement”, “Environmental monitoring and controlling” etc.
