Objectives and competences
The objective of this course is:
Students should understand the transportation planning process.
Students should be familiar with methods and techniques of transportation data collecting and analysis, with assessments and evaluations of developed measures.
Students should know the stages of transportation planning model.
Content (Syllabus outline)
1. Transportation planning process, overview
2. Groups of transportation planning measures: land use planning, traffic-organizational, logistical, technical and technological, regulatory and fiscal, pricing, behavioral, infrastructural.
3. Development of measures; scenarios, variants.
4. Assessment of results of planned measures. Prognosis - methods: trend, model and quasi-prognosis.
5. Evaluation of results: multi-criteria, monetarization and cost-benefit, weighted indicators.
6. Transportation analysis – traffic and mobility data collection. Cordon and corridor analysis, tracking methods.
7. Transportation modeling, traditional four stages transportation model, overview.
8. Trip generation, production and attraction, purposes of travel. Methods of assessment (cross classification).
9. Trip distribution. Empirical and synthetical (gravitational) approaches. Origin-destination matrix.
10. Generalized costs. Assessment of mode choice and modal split. Logit approach.
11. Route choice and network assignment methods. Wardrope equilibrium, incremental methods.
Practical examples.
Use of transportation planning tools (PTV-Vision, TransCAD).

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Finishing this course, students:
Understand the generation and distribution of travel demand and how to develop sustainable transport supply.
Understand the approaches and process of transportation planning.
Understand how to develop a hierarchical system of planning goals with indicators.
Understand how to develop measures, assess and evaluate the expected results (to develop prognosis).
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
Finishing this course, students:
Can apply the methodology of planning (goals, analysis, development of measures).
Use results of transportation planning process as entry data for transportation infrastructure design.
Use of transportation planning software.
