Objectives and competences
The objectives of this course will enable the students to acquire basic theoretical knowledge necessary for a critical analysis of modern and contemporary architectural production, for a critical evaluation and reflection of current developments in architecture, and for an insight into how architecture deals with the complex web of conditions that make up any given situation.
Content (Syllabus outline)
. Introduction to the modern architectural production
• definition of basic terms and concepts (modernism, modernity, modern architecture)
• outline of the development and transformations of modern architecture
II. Introduction to the contemporary architectural production
1. structuralism, 2. Neo-Avantgarde, 3. rationalism, 4. post-modernism, 5. populism, 6. productivism, 7. critical regionalism, 8. architecture in the age of globalisation, 9. sustainable architecture
III. Conditions of the emergence of modern and contemporary architecture and its effects
• the ways of engagement of architectural production/architecture with the economic, political and cultural contexts in which it works/is made: architecture as an integral part of social reality vs. architecture as a transformation of social reality
• evaluation of architectural production in the context of the sustainable development paradigm
IV. The significance and role of the (digital) media in modern and contemporary architecture
• the issue and significance of the intertwining of architectural production as building and design, and the “less material” production of architecture in the (predominantly digital) media.
Learning and teaching methods
Lectures, seminars, discussions on the question of contemporary architecture related to current state of affairs (in architecture) in Slovenia and elsewhere
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
• analyse architectural projects in the context of the history of modern architecture and various architectural tendencies of recent decades graphically and/or textually
• compare, describe and evaluate a selected architectural project in relation to the central concepts of modern and contemporary architecture
• research and identify the engagement of architecture with the complex web of conditions that make up every given situation in which it is created
• recognise and argue the wider social and environmental significance of architectural work
• critically assess and reflect on current developments in architecture, as well as modern architecture and its status as architectural heritage.
• apply acquired analytical and theoretical knowledge to the practice/design of architecture
Intended learning outcomes - transferable/key skills and other attributes
Communication skills: written expression in the written exam, oral expression in presentations, articulation of ideas when graphically drawing the analysis; ability to pursue interdisciplinary research.
