Objectives and competences

– understanding the basics and the purpose of open space design, nature conservation and cultural landscape conservation; – familiarity with landscape typology; – familiarity with spatial documents and legislation – familiarity with historical development of open space design; – knowledge of basic techniques and methods in planning of private, semi-public and public open spaces; – understanding of design approach: inventory, analyses, concepts development to multiple design solutions; - knowledge of the basics of urban horticulture

Content (Syllabus outline)

Introduction to open space planning - basic concepts - landscape typology - landscape regions and landscape patterns Sustainable management of urban open space The role of green spaces in mitigating urban heat islands and preserving biodiversity Urban green systems in the context of health, ecology and social equity Historical examples of green spaces as a basis for understanding contemporary approaches to sustainable urban design The planning process and public participation - inventory - analyses - concepts - alternative solutions Graphics in open space planning and project documentation Private green spaces Public and semi-public green spaces Urban horticulture and its sustainable practice

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

At the end of the course the student is able: – to use professional terminology in the field of open space design actively; – to select and to use appropriate graphic methods and tools for landscape designing; – to analyze independently a case study; – to design a simple spatial solution for an open surface of any size.

Overview knowledge of legislation in the field of spatial planning Ability of independant analysis, synthesis and presentation of a case study interdisciplinary approach of different professions
