Objectives and competences

The objective of this course is that students will be able to independently perform the architectural and structural design of simple wooden objects.

Content (Syllabus outline)

1. Timber buildings in the world. 2. Growth, physical and mechanical characteristics of solid and glued timber, cross-laminated timber and timber products. 3. Classification of solid and glued timber. 4. Mechanical fasteners; basic purpose of mechanical fasteners. 5. Basic structural systems of timber buildings. 6. Detailing in timber buildings. 7. Basic concepts for timber cross-section dimensioning according to Eurocode 5 standards (Ultimate and Serviceability Limit State). 8. Glue-laminated timber.

Learning and teaching methods

Mostly with Power Point presentations.
