Objectives and competences
• revision and upgrade of general English grammar so students are able to actively communicate in the English language (grammar is part of the tourism related topics),
• introducing some more specific, yet very typical and frequently used features of the language in various areas of tourism, in in the masters programme the topics are broadened to the more general and larger field of business English and tourism,
• Introduce characteristics of tourism discourse,
• Analyse most common mistakes of Slovene and Slavic speakers of English,
• Present cros-cultural dimensions of tourism communication
Competencies gained by the students:
• Upgrading of communication skills in business English,
• Upgrading of communication skills regarding intercultural communication,
• More confident communication in English,
• Broadening the knowledge of specific business terminology (speaking, writing, reading, listening),
• expanding the knowledge on translating different professional texts
Content (Syllabus outline)
Topics:
• vocabulary of various areas of tourism (sustainable, green, responsible tourism, sporting tourism, cultural tourism, literary tourism, digital tourism etc.);
• successful presentation (the field of tourism) in front of the audience (steps of a good presentation: preparation, phrases, body language etc.);
• specifics of oral and written communication in English:
• tourism discourse and its characteristics,
• politeness in communication;
• intercultural communication,
• typical mistakes of Slovene and Slavic speakers of English,
• Slovene culture in English (Slovene habits and traditions in English, Slovene dishes and wines in English etc);
• cultures across the world and cultural differences;
• new media and new technologies

• Upper Intermediate and advanced English Grammar;
• Common mistakes of Slovene speakers of English.

• Practial language work in pairs and groups,
• Audio-visual presentations,

• Listening to various conversations, discussions, audio clips etc.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Knowledge and Understanding:
• Ability to express orally and in writing about the topics covered in this semester,
• Master several situations in professional life in English (writing, speaking, reading and listening skills).
Transferable/Key Skills and other attributes:
• understanding of discussed, professionally relevant topics;
• discussing basic theoretical and practical problems of tourism;
• understanding the concepts of tourism;
• the usage of newly acquired language skills (students may apply the models of oral and written communication to practice in tourism).
