Objectives:
• To present the main qualitative and quantitative research methods in tourism
• To present the main steps in the scientific research process
• Encourage and mentor students to undertake systematic empirical research - conducting their own empirical research
Competences:
Student:
• is able to conduct an independent research using basic quantitative and qualitative research methods in tourism studies
Content (Syllabus outline)
• Science, general about science
• Science research work
• fundamental research, applied research, developmental research
• marketing research versus scientific research
• Science and expert papers.
• Types of science papers: monograph, paper, project, patent.
• Structure of scientific work. Problem. Aims and goals of the research. Purpose of the study.
• Phases of scientific research: Conceptualisation, Operationalisation, Instruments design, Field work, Data Management, Interpretation.
• Quantitative and qualitative research methods in tourism.
• Research report.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Students:
• Know how to choose the appropriate research method according to the research question
• Are aware of ethical dilemmas in conducting research
• Develop a basic research plan
• Use the selected research method for primary data collection
• Analyse and interpret the results in an understandable way
• Provide suggestions for further research and for changes in tourism practices based on the research results
