Objectives and competences
As an upgrade to the previous semesters, where the bases of professional English were laid by getting acquainted with English in tourism, in the second semester of the master’s programme the topics are broadened to the more general and larger field of business English and tourism.
• Broaden the knowledge of the English language by introducing some more specific features of the language in various areas of tourism,
• Fluency in business and scientific communication and corresponding registers,
• Active participation in professional discussions in the English language,
• Providing arguments for one’s views and decisions in the English language
Competencies gained by the students:
• Upgrading of communication skills in business English,
• More confident communication in English,
• Usage of specific business terminology (speaking, writing, reading, listening),
• Analysis of different professional texts,
• Translating different professional texts
Content (Syllabus outline)
Topics:
• Vocabulary of various areas of tourism;
• Tourism enterprises and management – positive local and global examples;
• Promotional texts in tourism (the language of marketing and promotion);
• Successful presentation (the field of tourism) in front of the audience (steps of a good presentation: preparation, phrases, body language etc.)-upgrade of the previous semester;
• formality in written communication (e-mails, notices, contracts etc.);
• formality in oral communication (personal communication, business communication);
• Storytelling in tourism,
• characteristics of scientific writing in English;
• appropriate register in oral and written communication,
• typical mistakes of Slovene/Slavic speakers of English,
• basic legal terminology and legal discourse

• Advanced English Grammar;
• Common mistakes of Slovene speakers of English.

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Knowledge and Understanding:
• At the end of the course, students are able to express themselves orally and in writing about the topics covered in this semester, as well as to master several situations in professional life in English (writing, speaking, reading and listening skills).
Transferable/Key Skills and other attributes:
• understanding of discussed, professionally relevant topics;
• understanding basic theoretical and practical problems of tourism;
• understanding the concepts of tourism;
• writing texts of various professional genres;
• writing scientific texts;
• the usage of newly acquired language skills (students may apply the models of oral and written communication to practice in tourism: active participation in discussions, providing arguments in decision-making and discussions);
• the ability to work in international environment (international tenders, international research groups, meetings etc.).

Prerequisits
Students are supposed to be fluent in the English language (knowledge of the subjects English in Tourism I, II, III, English in Tourism – Higher Level 1).
