Objectives and competences

Objectives: • Encourage students to seek their own research specialization and focus their further studies. • Encourage students to read scientific and professional literature in the field of tourism studies, especially from the area in which they wish to specialize themselves. • Encourage students to critically and analytically write in tourism studies, especially on the topics in which they want to specialize themselves. Competencies: • Research thinking and writing based on independent analysis of scientific literature in tourism studies.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Tourism studies - basic overview • Identifying your own research area • Professional and scientific genres in tourism studies with an emphasis on scientific review articles • Rules of writing and citation • Central research journals in the field of tourism studies • Defining research questions • Basics of research ethics • Analytical approach to research • Creating and defining one’s own theses • The power of visualization in the research process

Learning and teaching methods

This course uses a wide range of teaching methods including: • Seminar • Discussion groups • Presentations of own student work • Video lectures and documentaries • Individual study

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Students: • Understand the importance of specialization in research in tourism studies and take the first steps towards the specialization of their own research interests • Distinguish between scientific and professional writing genres in tourism studies • Are familiar with the most important scientific journals in the field of tourism studies • Are able to formulate their own research questions • Are able to search for scientific and professional literature from their field of interest • Know how to cite literature • Demonstrate the ability of an analytical approach to literature review • Are able to put forward a thesis and argue it on the basis of literature review
