Objectives and competences
Objectives of the course are:
• to define different conceptions and categorizations of heritage
• to classify the institutionalization of heritage protection
• to explain the causes and ways of heritagization
• to define the interaction between heritage and tourism
• to draw attention to the relations between heritage, local community and tourism
• to emphasize representative heritage elements and their uses in tourism
Competencies acquired by students are:
• they learn the principles and methods of field research
• they learn a critical resource selection
• they develop communication skills in the field
• they learn how to recognize heritage in tourism
Content (Syllabus outline)
The course addresses the following thematic sections:
• definitions, typologies and forms of heritage
• the sciences that study heritage and their methods of research
• safeguarding heritage: institutions and associations, legislation, registries, UNESCO
• heritage representation: stereotyping, nationalization, Europeanization
• the heritage of national importance (a review for Slovenia)
• heritage and tourism: types of tourism, development, trends, projects and strategies
• interactions between tourism and heritage: brands, souvenirs, festivals
• use of heritage in tourism (selected examples)
• heritage bearers: attitudes toward heritage, identity, economy
• heritage and local communities (selected examples)
Learning and teaching methods
The course combines different methods of teaching and learning:
• lectures
• guest lectures
• AV presentations
• studying cases in the field
• discussion and other forms of active participation
• presentations of seminar papers
• independent work of students
Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding
Knowledge and understanding:
After completing the course, students:
• are familiar with different heritage definitions
• identify different types and forms of heritage in promotional materials and in the field
• distinguish the ways of heritage safeguarding and are aware of the institutional authorizations
• understand the processes of heritagization and heritage evaluation in local communities, countries and state alliances
• recognize the attitudes toward heritage and its socio-economic meaning
• are able to link heritage with tourism and evaluate interactions
• are able to analyse the use of heritage in the local environment
