Objectives and competences

Course objectives are to: • to give knowledge and understanding of the economic and social significance of tourism, its main characteristics, factors of its development, connections between a landscape’s potentials and the actual development of tourism, and the effects of tourism development, • to acquaint the methods of analyzing tourist development, especially its effects in tourism destination, • to acquaint the most important tourist regions in the world, Europe and especially the tourism development potentials and opportunities in Slovenia and its destinations. Competencies that are gained by the students are: • to absorb and understand development of skills and abilities of using expert knowledge in their profession from the perspective of tourism geography. • understanding the importance of team work in class and on field for successful problem solving and evaluation of tourism potentials important for tourism. • recognize the importance of participation of evaluation assessments on suitable sites for tourism, geographic landscapes and destinations for sustainable and responsible tourism. • ability to use theoretical knowledge in practice in the field of geography of tourism.

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Basics and definitions of geography of tourism. • Tourism as a spatial and geographic system (basic elements). • The meaning of natural and cultural potentials of the region for tourism and recreation. • Methods for validation the landscape for tourism suitability. • The meaning of recreational patterns, the methods of empiric study. • Definition and characteristics of tourist resorts. • Models of tourist development. • Impacts of climate, geology, transport and other elements on development of different forms of tourism. • Tourist migrations and international tourist flows. • The most important tourist regions in Europe. • The most important tourist regions in the world. • The development of tourism and tourist regions in Slovenia. • Field work in tourist resort.

Learning and teaching methods

This course uses a range of teaching methods including: • Lectures. • Group work and discussion groups. • Presentations of good practice. • Videos and films. • Case studies from practical cases and from local environment. • Individual study. • Problem solutions • Case study comparison and valorisation • Field work and research

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and Understanding: • knowledge of the phenomenon, connected with development of the tourism in today's world and home. • the ability to use knowledge in practice and in the related matters on concrete cases as well as its application on similar fields. • the ability to research in the field of study of the area of geography of tourism • the ability to solve work problems on the field of geography of tourism. • the ability to write expert papers and evaluation reports. • the ability to be cooperative, to work in group and to develop communication skills.
