Objectives and competences

Course objectives: • Give an overview of the historical development of rhetoric; • Explain basic terms and principles of rhetoric; • explain convincing and effective communication, public speaking, preparing lectures or presentations (seminars, thesis etc.). They also learn how to control stage fright and prepare texts and statements for the media; • explain and analyse examples of various diverse rhetorical situations and public appearances in the areas of tourism and business communication; • razložiti basic knowledge of speech culture; • Analyse public speaking skills and presentations of students and other public speakers; • explain successful argumentation techniques; • explain successful techniques of persuasion Competencies gained by the students: • Ability to critically evaluate persuasive (and marketing) techniques that we see in our everyday lives; • Ability to critically evaluate and creatively apply the knowledge from rhetorics to other areas of students' studies and work, also with specifics in various cultures and languages; • Ability of analytical thinking and acquiring the ability of analysing various genres; • communication skills and strategic alignment in the field of communication • More confidence in speaking and delivering presentations in various rhetorical situations

Content (Syllabus outline)

• Basic topics of the course: • Introduction and a short history of rhetorics from Aristotle to today, when rhetoric is influenced by new media and modern technologies; • Acquaintance with the basic terms and principles of rhetoric as INVENTIO (invention), DISPOSITIO (arrangement), ELOCUTIO (style), MEMORIA (memory) in PRONUNCIATIO (delivery) and their role; • Various types of rhetoric, genres and speeches; • Use of means of persuasion ethos, pathos and logos; • Structure of speeches, their preparation and delivery in front of the audience; • The role of language, voice and body language; • Basic rules of effective communication (showing up on time, shaking hands, eye contact, smile, posture etc.); • Introduction of yourself (how to start and introduce yourself); • What to tell and how; • Speaking abilities and peculiarities; • Exercises for better articulation; • Characteristics of a convincing performance; • Speech and speech/presentation preparation; • Dealing with stage fright; • Media characteristics; • Work with the media (camera, microphones, lights etc.); • How to write for media; • Press release, appearance on tv, radio, internet

Learning and teaching methods

This course uses a range of teaching methods including the following: • lectures • seminars, • discussions • work in groups • work in pairs • tutorials • case studies • video presentations, clips of speeches, films and theatre performaces • delivery of a speech in front of the audience and in front of a camera (simulation, role playing)

Intended learning outcomes - knowledge and understanding

Knowledge and understanding: The foreseen study results of a student are shown in: • Understanding the importance of rhetorics in the field of tourism; • Understanding the role of language in tourism; • Use of basic terminology of rhetoric; • Use and analysis of persuasion techniques; • Analysis of speeches and public appearances of various genres; • Use of theoretical and practical skills from the areas of speech culture and body language that are necessary for a successful communication in tourism • Successful preparation and delivery of a presentation in front of the audience; • Preparation and delivery of a speech in front of the camera.
